10 New NYC Vegetarian Restaurants: From Empanadas to French Bakeries

If you live in or visit New York City, you already know that the area is a hotspot for diverse vegetarian foods, from classic fast food to fine dining. In just the past few months, eating vegan has gotten even better with the addition of 10 more vegan restaurants.

In New York City’s East Village, Raw Vegetarian Rabbit—created by restaurateur Ravi DeRos and Overthrow Hospitality—is an intimate 12-seat chef’s counter serving a seasonal rotating tasting menu of more than a dozen dishes for $75 per person. The upscale little restaurant distinguishes itself from other local vegetarian hotspots with its eccentric anecdotal theme intended to transport customers “in the rabbit hole” – a nod to Lewis Carroll. “Rabbit is our first raw vegan concept — it was an idea we’d been playing around with for a while and we were looking for the right chef and shape,” Ravi DeRos, founder of Overthrow Hospitality, tells VegNews.


Adjacent to Rabbit is a vegetarian dessert and The Fragile Flour wine bar. Presented by pastry chef and comic dancer Lady Ashton Warren, the bar offers an opening menu featuring desserts such as coffee-infused chocolate tiramisu, lemon meringue pie, and strawberry parfait grains alongside wines from around the world. Delicious pre-dinners such as gouda pastries and mushroom pesto arancini are also served early in the evening.

“I’ve been a vegetarian since 2007 and have cramed into the market to create delicious foods to accommodate all dietary restrictions,” Warren said in a statement. “I think everyone deserves dessert, and The Fragile Flour celebrates that.”

Vegetarian options in New York City are increasing

In the same East Village neighborhood, you’ll find the English-style vegan beer bar Proletariat, which offers over 20 draft picks and a rotating menu of hard-to-find bottles and cans, along with a menu of vegan pub fare such as maitake scones, shepherd’s pie, potato cakes and porridge of corn flour.

The largest vegetarian restaurant in New York City is the upscale new brewpub Belse, with nearly 200 seats in 11,000 square feet. From the team behind Little Pine in Los Angeles, Belse is the outpost in New York City that serves similar comfort foods like apple sandwich, sausage fennel bread, and chick’n picatta, along with beer brewed on site.

Coming soon to West Village is a vegan empanada from Vence. Regarded as America’s first vegan empanada, Fons first opened its doors in Chicago last year and has since expanded to two additional locations. The outpost in New York City will be the fourth and first location outside of Chicago. The husband-and-wife team is putting the finishing touches to its new location on Bleecker Street with plans to open its doors next month for takeout, takeout, delivery and catering services.

“Last year, we opened our first location in Chicago, Illinois, and were named America’s first vegan empanadas. After a year and a half with this amazing trip, it’s time to go to New York,” Fons co-founder Daniel Briceno told VegNews. “Our first steps in the US were in New York City – we’re originally from Venezuela and came here in 2018 – and we moved six months later. Vegetarian fast food and soul food are booming in New York City

In the Flatiron NoMad District, the second location of vegan fast food chain PLNT Burger serves up American comfort classics like burgers, chicken sandwiches, milkshakes, and fries. Created by celebrity chef Spike Mendelssohn (Alum Bravo top chef) and Seth Goldman (former CEO of Beyond Meat), PLNT Burger will soon have more locations throughout New York City. This new flagship location joins another one outside the Whole Foods Market in the Union Square neighborhood.

“This is our first nationwide store to be spacious enough to host events surrounding the plant-based movement while enjoying classic comfort foods that are delicious, nutritious and planet-friendly,” Mendelsohn said in a statement.

If vegan soul food is what you’re after, New York City has you covered. Located in The World Artisan Market, a repurposed warehouse building in New York City’s Astoria neighborhood, Latin-inspired Urban Vegan Roots – the sister site to Urban Vegan Kitchen – serves soul food like mac and cheese, Buffalo wings, vegan chicken, pancakes, pizza and burgers .

Vegetarian food grows in Brooklyn too

In Brooklyn, the town now has its own vegan ice cream shop, deli, and French bakery. Located in Clinton Hill, Dreamery offers seasonal ice cream flavors like burnt plum sesame, lavender Earl Gray, beet, banana, tea, and cherry pie, along with other house-made vegan treats like long churros and pound sour gum.

In Williamsburg, you’ll find Garden Carver’s vegan café serving gourmet-style fare like breakfast sandwiches, “mashed” veggie burgers, deli chops, or orange “chicken” containers with broccoli. And in Bedstuy, French vegan bakery Le Petit Monstre has opened a second location serving pastries, cakes, pies and coffee.
