Commissioners discuss approving a modification agreement to upgrade the County’s 911 system

Hillsborough County – Summary of the September 21, 2022 Board of County Commissioners Meeting

During a Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting on September 21, 2022, the commissioners presented the 2021 Hillsborough County Community Wise Water Award to resident Beth Allens for her efforts to create a water conservation landscape in her home.

For more than 20 years, the Community Water Wise Award Program has recognized landscaping in homes, businesses, industries or governments that protect the environment. Last year’s award was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Council recognized a fellowship church based on the Bible to promote diversity, equality and inclusion in society.

Church members worked with other community members to support a resolution declaring racism a public health crisis, which was passed by the BOCC in September 2020. Members continue to engage and advance the county’s achievements in promoting diversity.

Since the resolution was passed, the county has conducted a property rights profile, enacted the Tenant Rights Act, created an Office of Diversity, Equality, Inclusion, and more.

During their September 21, 2022 meeting, commissioners agreed to purchase 78.97 acres of land adjacent to the Little Manatee River Preserve through the Jean K Platt Environmental Land Acquisition and Protection Program. (ELAPP) The acquisition of the property will provide improved environmental benefits, access, security, and management of the entire reserve.

Commissioners approved an $8.1 million amendment agreement to modernize the county’s 911 system. Hardware and software upgrades are required to ensure the reliable operation of the 911 call processing system to include call receiving equipment, network infrastructure, communication with public safety answering points, maintenance payments and support, additional equipment, security monitoring and vulnerability scanning services.

The Council adopted a decision to amend the list of projects of the fourth phase of the community investment tax.

The changes add 10 new projects, including:

  • Two projects for fire services
  • Two projects for government facilities
  • Six projects for the province’s gardens

The commissioners received an update on the educational outreach campaign related to commercial sales of pet rabbits.

Since launching the campaign in early 2022, Pet Resource Center leaders have found that most stores support the educational campaign.

Additionally, employees found the following:

  • 31% of stores sold fewer rabbits in 2022 than in 2021
  • 54% of stores sold roughly the same, and –
  • 15% sold more

The board directed county employees to re-report about regulations in other Florida jurisdictions and what the board could do to regulate the commercial sale of rabbits in Hillsborough County. Staff will consult with various agricultural organizations to ensure that there are protections and exceptions for sales of rabbits when it comes to agricultural uses.

The next regular BOCC meeting will be held at 9 am Thursday, October 6, 2022. You can watch the meeting live on YouTube at Hillsborough County Meetings Channel.
