Michigan State Fair returns to Novi for its 10th year

Curious crowds gathered around the dozens of livestock exhibits Thursday afternoon for a chance to breed pets at the Michigan State Fair in Novi.

The sounds of cows, goats and pigs filled the air on the 10th anniversary of the event. The state fair, held at the Suburban Collection Showplace at 46100 Grand River Ave, began Thursday morning and will run through Monday.

Dave Kohn, 52, is among those who have attended the event every year since the show moved to Novi in ​​2012. Kohn brought his animals from his Udderly Nutz farm in Lyon and has been working at the famous Beginning of Life exhibit, where visitors can pet baby rabbits, ducks and goats. . For him, the most rewarding aspect is educating ordinary people who often cannot see farm animals.

What prevents him from returning?

“When babies come to you with smiles on their faces, that’s really nice for me,” he said when two little girls asked to pet a month-old bunny in his arms.

With a record attendance of 280,000 last year, the state fair is ready to welcome hundreds of thousands of fair visitors to this weekend’s event. Among other attractions, the State Fair is back this year with animal fairs, carnival rides, competitions, and live entertainment. Livestock fairs include displays and opportunities for pets such as cows, goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, ducks, and even turtles. Food options are plentiful: From funnel cakes and fried Oreos to gyros and pizza, the State Fair features all the Carnival classics and more.

This year, the show is back with new attractions, like the Pork Chop play and Cool Zoo. Parking is now free, new policy states that minors must be accompanied by adults after 6 p.m.

The State Fair first began in 1849 in Detroit, and was held at the State Fairgrounds on Woodward Avenue in Detroit until 2009, when it was halted due to budget issues. In 2012, he moved to Showplace in Novi, where it has been held ever since.
