Rabbits are not what comes to mind when the topic of dollars, dots, combos, and kindling comes up.

Sophie La Prairie remembers writing to a friend, talking bucks, and doing. Her friend told her she was confused that she thought she had a pet deer.

Dollars are male rabbits, do females, and kittens, and brooding is what babies are called when they are born.

La Prairie and her husband Simon Perreault own Trouble Maker Acres in Lac La Hache. They moved to South Cariboo a little over a year ago.

“We were so excited to be here and have land,” she said. We were like ‘cattle! “

They thought of what they could have that would be relatively low maintenance while building their cabin. I started getting to know rabbits and saw that there were many for sale in the area.

La Prairie had no experience working with rabbits when they started the farm but she has learned a lot since then. They started with six Rex and six New Zealanders with the idea of crossbreeding them to produce meat for both dogs and puppies.

All of their rabbits are named after celebrities, a practice that started with their first rabbits.

Three of the original Rex were brothers, black, broken castor and castor in coloration. Her husband, Eddie Murphy, Charlie Murphy, and Rick James have proposed. Names stuck and La Prairie felt they should continue with the celebrity naming theme.

While crossbreeding generally produces larger rabbits for meat, I eventually decided to focus primarily on purebred rabbits for their fur.

They currently have Rexs, Satins, New Zealands and Champagne d’Argent breeds.

La Prairie said it sells all of its New Zealand rabbits because they have “normal” rabbit fur. That’s fine for many things, but for her, “special rabbit fur is more fun,” she said, adding, “Four breeds are too many.”

Satin has recessive features that make its fur look shiny while champagne is black underneath with white ticking and feels luxurious. The guard bristles on the Rex are the same length as their undercoat making them feel like velvet.

“Champagne, they seem to have more hair per square inch because their skins are really thick and really luxurious. Historically they were really prized for their qualities.”

Knowing the rabbit’s genes makes it easier when it comes to breeding, and knowing the potential combinations of traits in potential litters, she said.

The labels on each cage list the name, breed, gender, date of birth and color genetics.

Leonardo DiCaprio and his sister Lucy Lawless are both clowns. Leo is black and orange while Lucy is white and black.

“So I keep these two. This is a long-term breeding project of mine — to get a clown jacket in Rex fur,” she laughed.

She said that the genetics of rabbit color are not that complicated once you get into it but that there is a wide range of color options. Rex comes in only 16 colors.

“I really want to make a big patchwork blanket out of Rex skins, all different colors.”

Uma is one of the original New Zealand rabbits and will be going to her new home in Prince George in October with other New Zealand rabbits owned by La Prairie.

La Prairie said she is happy with how things are going, connecting with another breeder.

“They were part of my first set of rabbits that I bought. I developed a relationship with your breeding stock and didn’t feel right just by placing an ad on Kijiji,” she said.
